for netanyahu but barack obama on this issue. the supreme leader under the pressure of sanctions will decide to accept meaningful curbs on his nuclear program, or the president is going to have to decide. what does he do about a program that is approaching nuclear weapons threshold? >> if we look at the nomination and likely confirmation of a new secretary of state john kerry and chuck hagel at defense however problematic that confirmation hearing goes, what do you think the president is saying with this new national security team about what he wants to accomplish in the world in a second term? >> well, i think in the case of senator hagel, i think he will be confirmed. i think the choice there fits very well with what the president said in his inaugural speech he mentioned a decade of war is ending. his job will be to get u.s. armed forces out of afghanistan in a responsible way but to get them out. and then to look at cutting the defense budget. i think those are the two principle responsibilities that the president wants to see him fulfill. and hagel is the right man for that kind of job.

that this is the main vehicle. the gang of eight bill will be the main vehicle with president obama's backing. if you need an example of why republicans need to get on this issue, nevada started the 2012 election as a swing state. by the end of it neither party was spending money there because the hispanic community was so aligned with the democratic candidate that mitt romney couldn't compete. it went the way of new mexico in 2008, and i think republicans recognized that this is a first step. simply signing on to immigration reform doesn't mean they're going to win 70% of the hispanic vote, but they need to get this issue behind them because electorally speaking they would struggle for a decade or two decades if they don't. sxwro we've seen a mood swing. republicans know they have to get right on this, and this is why you're seeing this coalition come together so quickly. there's support for it. there's a new cbs news poll that shows that a majority, 51%, believe in a path to sit sfwlenship. there's only 24% that say the undocumented immigrant should get out. >> that will be one of the final issues

as the white house is working on its own immigration bill and president obama will address the issue tomorrow in las vegas. the bipartisan senate plan includes a path to citizenship, but illegal immigrants will have to undergo a background check and pay a fine and back taxes before gaining legal status in the united states. all that is contingent on securing borders. the proposal provides for increased use of drones, more personnel and improved infrastructure and it would create an employment verification system and improve the process for admitting needed workers. cnn chief congressional correspondent dana bash and cnn chief white house correspondent jessica yellin are working the story. dana, the tone was pretty optimistic up on capitol hill today. >> it sure was but, you know, we have seen this movie before, you and i, wolf, and a lot of other people watching this issue go kind of up and down with the partisan wins. but this is something that is different this time. because of something very simple. and that is what happened in the last election to republicans. particularly mitt romney wit

convinced mccain but his ideas did convince another influential politician, president obama. the two of them, president obama and chuck hagel toured iraq and afghanistan together in 2008. afterwards obama said in a they agreed on almost every foreign policy issue. there was even speculation that the president might tap hagel for vice president. well, that, of course, didn't happen but the president did get hagel's endorsement. maybe that's what accounts for some of john mccain's bitterness. mccain isn't the only one who is lining up against hagel though. senator lindsey graham, mccain mccain's new bff also took a shot. he brought up hagel's newest comment that, quote the jewish lobby intimidateed law makers. >> name one person in your opinion who is intimidated by the israeli lobby in the united states senate. >> well, first. >> name one. >> i don't know. >> why would you say it? >> i didn't have in mind a specific person. >> jennifer: that, too went on and on. after the hearing graham, who up until that point had been none noncommittal told foreign policy magazine that he was unlikely to vo

. the big issues that divide republicans and democrats. the surge is one of them. this is the great action that george bush took in the minds of republicans that the president obama opposed, vice president biden opposed, and obviously chuck hagel opposed. they like to think the republicans that the surge surgery seeded, and there is some evidence that the surge did contribute for reasonable outcome in iraq, and it wouldn't have been that hard for chuck hagel to say, well, it may have contributed to things, but we won't know about the success of iraq for many, many decades. he is playing it tough as well. he is not going to give the republicans the benefit of winning one of these politics of foreign policy debates. same with iran. during the campaign romney took the hard line position most of the way until the end when he softened up a little bit on iran, suggesting that if he had been president, that he would move very quickly towards the use of force. many people have questions about that. chuck hagel has questions about it. the president has questions about it. many americans wonder whet
